Did you know that you can book appointments with the doctors by using our online service? You can also order repeat prescriptions online too! If you wish to sign up for this service, please just pop into reception with some form of ID and your access will be requested.
The surgery is open Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) 8.30am until 6.30pm – the phones are answered between 8am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday.
EXTENDED HOURS AT ‘THE HUB’
We have joined forces with other local practices to run surgeries outside of our usual opening hours. These surgeries are run from Bosworth Medical Centre, Crabtree Drive, Chelmsley Wood as follows:-
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday : 6.30pm – 8pm
Saturday : 9am – 12 noon
Sunday : 9am – 11am
Appointments are available to pre-book with doctors, nurses and HCAs and can be booked via the reception here.
CHANGES TO CHARGES
There has been a change to our charges for written letters from the doctor. This has been increased to £20 in accordance with BMA guidance. Further details and a pro-forma to complete to request this service is available at reception.
You may notice, at the bottom of your repeat prescription slip, there is a note giving a date for a medication review. This date is a trigger so that your GP reviews the repeat medication that you are taking; if they are happy to keep prescribing this for you, they will change the date. If they feel you need a review, the date will stay the same. If you, therefore, need to book a medication review, please make an appointment with a Nurse Practitioner (not your GP). If you require a review and do not book one, a different message will appear at the bottom of your repeat request slip, which will state that no further medication will be prescribed until a review is done. This does not mean that the practice will withhold medication, it is a system to ensure everyone who needs to be seen is seen. If you have not been able to book and appointment, please explain this to reception.
The practice is pleased to support students on their placements to learn more about general practice. We have medical students, nurse students and admin work experience students. If you would rather not have a student in the consultation with you, please make this known.
PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP
We have an active Patient Participation Group (PPG) who support the practice. The group meets quarterly but also gets involved in practice activities such as helping direct people at the flu clinics, handing out patient surveys, fundraising, etc. If you would like to join this group, please leave your details at reception and they will be passed onto Sue Rogers.
If you have a test and the results are returned as abnormal, this may mean that you need to make an appointment to see a doctor, nurse or nurse practitioner. Usually we will contact you, however, if in doubt please do phone reception to double-check if you haven’t heard from us.
FIRE ALARM TEST
We will routinely test the fire alarm on Fridays at 12 noon. When the alarm sounds at this time you do not need to do anything unless a member of staff alerts you.
Our Nurse Practitioners are highly trained and can deal with numerous conditions. We have recently started a ‘See and Treat’ clinic on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. These appointments are for one acute problem only. Hopefully this will increase the number of appointments available.
They will also have afternoon clinics for other things, e.g. more than one problem, medication reviews, depression reviews, diabetic reviews, etc.
Below is a list of ailments that Nurse Practitioners can deal with:-
Coughs, colds, virus and flu like illness
Chest infections, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations
Ear, nose and throat infections
Allergies, hay fever
Skin complaints, eczema
Emergency contraception, contraception advice and counselling, period problems
Musculoskeletal (MSK) complaint i.e. muscle and joint injuries/complaints including low back pain
Abdominal pain i.e. constipation, indigestion and heartburn, diarrhea and vomiting
Chest pain (other than those advised to call 999)
Nurse Practitioners cannot issue fit notes or provide care to pregnant women/pregnancy related problems.
OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION
The GPs and nurses no longer routinely prescribe medicines that can be bought over-the-counter (OTC) for certain, mostly short term, conditions or vitamin and mineral supplements for most patients. We are asking patients to take a different approach to managing the following conditions:-
Acute sort throat
Minor burns and scalds
Mild dry skin
Dry eyes and sore tired eyes
Ringworm or athlete’s foot
Infrequent cold sores of the lip
Insect bites and stings
Mild irritant dermatitis
Mild to moderate hay fever
Minor pain, discomfort and fever (such as aches and sprains, headache, period pain and back pain)
Warts and verrucae
Indigestion and heartburn
Coughs, colds and nasal congestion
Teething or mild toothache
Prevention of tooth decay
We are moving towards the idea that these conditions will usually be treated via “self-care”. The team of health professionals at your local pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage these minor health concerns. You can buy OTC medicines at your local pharmacy and/or supermarket for any of these conditions.
If you are prescribed medicines that are available over-the-counter for a chronic (long-term) medical condition, such as paracetamol for osteoarthritis, you will still have them prescribed by your GP. If you have certain long-term medical conditions we may still want you to see the GP or nurse for the conditions listed above, as it may be the most appropriate way for you to get your medicines and allow us to monitor your health.
In the financial year 2017/18, the Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), which our practice is part of, spent approximately £15.7 million on prescriptions for medicines which could otherwise be purchased over the counter from a pharmacy and/or other outlets such as petrol stations or supermarkets. The costs to the NHS for many of the items used to treat minor conditions are often higher than the prices for which they can be purchased over-the-counter.
Your pharmacy can advise you on a number of minor ailments too.
